Understanding the Basics of Hypertension

Hypertension is the medical name for high blood pressure. It is known to affect a number of people all over the world and is also called the silent killer. Hypertension, usually, does not have any typical indications or symptoms. Though people having high blood pressure may suffer from headache, blurred vision, dizziness, and bleeding from the nose; hypertension is usually detected during routine blood pressure checkups.

Hypertension if not detected in early stages can affect the normal functioning of body organs. This will lead to other complications such as heart diseases, stroke and in extreme cases kidney failure.

There are many causes of high blood pressure. If the body retains too much water, it will cause the volume of blood in heart, arteries, and veins. This in turn will increase the BP in blood vessel and heart walls. In some cases, it has been observed that the heart beats very fast which, can also lead to high blood pressure. These conditions eventually lead to the damage of blood vessels.

The unit of measuring BP is millimeters of mercury or mmHg. BP reading consists of two types of pressures systolic and diastolic. Systolic pressure is the pressure in the blood vessel when the heartbeats and diastolic pressure is the pressure in between heartbeats.

In modern times, high blood pressure is considered as a serious and deadly disease. Food rich in sodium and other preservatives are the main reason behind the increased pressure of the blood. The prevalence of hypertension is mainly among people who have a high intake of sodium rich food easily available in the market. Sodium rich foods have salts that are retained in the body. These salts can trap water, leading to an increased pressure of blood i.e. hypertension

Processed and fast food is very rich in sodium. Most of us eat out in fast food chains when we are too busy. This has become and increasing practice nowadays. Experts are advising to keep the intake of such foods as minimal as possible. It is advisable to prepare a fresh mean and eat it. Health and nutritious food is very important to prevent hypertension.
