High blood pressure is often referred to as the silent killer because it can pave the way for heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure without a warning sign. Once it’s uncovered, however, you don’t have to end up on a regimen of medications that never end. There are natural remedies for high blood pressure that you might want to consider first.
We’re going to take a look in this article at natural remedies that you can find in your kitchen, or at the very worst, at your local grocery store. The advantage of using foods for high pressure is not only the fact that they can save you big bucks otherwise spent on medications. These remedies also generally have negligible or no side effects. And they don’t present the problem of mixing dangerously with any medications you may be taking for other conditions.
So let’s take a look at some of these natural remedies for high blood pressure…
Garlic
For years, garlic has been touted as being good for you. The good news is that recent research has reinforced garlic’s positive effect on high blood pressure. A regular regimen of garlic powder in doses between 600mg and 900mg a day was shown to drop the systolic pressure by 8.4mmHg and the diastolic pressure by 7.3mmHg in those people who had a hypertension condition.
Coriander
Coriander is a rich resource for calcium, iron, potassium and more. In fact, a tablespoon of dried coriander contains approximately 80 mg of potassium. Because of these nutrients, it’s often used to reduce stress and hypertension and serves as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. When combined with fresh curry leaves and consumed as a juice, it’s most effective. The recommendation is a full glass three times a day for one to two months, after which you can reduce your intake to two glasses a day.
Onions
A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition reported that quercetin, a compound usually associated with onions may actually reduce high blood pressure by approximately 5 mmHg. Quercetin is a flavonol, which is commonly known for its antioxidant properties. The study found that a daily supplement of 730 milligrams of quercetin over a 28-day period resulted in a significant drop in the blood pressure of the participants. Varieties such as Western Yellow, New York Bold, and Northern Red onions have the richest concentration of quercetin.
Beetroot Juice
A recent study at The London School of Medicine found that drinking 500ml of beetroot juice a day will significantly reduce pressure. It appears to be the dietary nitrate in the beetroot juice that does the job. The results are nearly instantaneous, within three to four hours after consuming the juice.
These are just a few of the natural remedies for high blood pressure, but a great place to start if you’re looking for an alternative to expensive medications that come with side effects. Of course, you should always consult with your physician before starting any alternative approach to controlling your hypertension.
