Millions of people suffer of low blood pressure problems, this, unlike high blood pressure has noticeable symptoms, and it is important to treat it, because in some cases, a sudden drop of low blood pressure can produce us great damage. To understand low blood pressure, one must also understand the causes. One of the biggest low blood pressure causes is dehydration.
Dehydration occurs when we deplete the reserve of body water. Since our body runs out of vital fluid, the volume of blood also lowers, causing hypotension. This is not the only cause of low blood pressure, but it is among the most common ones. Especially when dehydration happens because of vomiting, diarrhea and the use of water pills or diuretics – pills that eliminate a lot of water through urination.
Other causes of dehydration include excessive sweating, vomiting, heat exhaustion or heart stroke. The situation gets aggravated if the person does not take water to restore the normal levels of water in the body. If you have a soft dehydration you will experience two characteristic symptoms: dry mouth and thirst. This should be a warning sign to prevent a moderate or severe dehydration which can cause orthostatic hypotension, and in some cases even shock and death.
Among the medications that can cause dehydration we have the before mentioned water pills such as flurosemide (Lasix) which cause a huge drop in the volume of the blood. It is important that we maintain good levels of water by drinking at least 8 glasses every day – no coffee, alcohol or soft drinks included.
