Did you know it is estimated that 1 out of every 5 people may be suffering from “the silent killer” high blood pressure? Heart disease is a major killer of people worldwide, and people with abnormally high pressure in their arteries are far more likely to die then others of premature heart disease. The American Heart Association has completed studies on the consumption of fish oils, and has determined that fish oils help prevent heart disease, including fatal and non-fatal heart attacks (myocardial infarctions), strokes, sudden cardiac death and coronary artery disease (angina). One of the ways these oils help to prevent these serious diseases by the lowering of pressure.
Taking fish oil for blood pressure how does it help? During a research study by John Hopkins Medical School they found that a daily intake of 3 grams per day of pure fish oil led to impressive reductions in the blood pressure of hypertensive individuals, based on 17 clinical trials lasting 3 months or less. During the clinical trials it was noted that fish oils (Omega3 fatty acids) lowered the pressure in the study group by an average of 5.5mm/hg Systolic pressure and 3.5mm/hg Diastolic pressure.
It was also noted by the researchers, that a dosage of Omega3 fish oil of less then 3 grams per day, but taken on a regular long term basis (ie over 3 months) will have the same health benefits of lowering blood pressure as the higher dose study groups.
The conclusion by the researchers of John Hopkins Medical School was that fish oil for blood pressure does work and is a safe and effective way to significantly lower a hypertensive person’s blood pressure and reduce the risks of cardiac disease.
Do I Have High Blood Pressure?
A medical professional should always evaluate your blood pressure; it is common for people to experience a short-term spike in pressure levels. Normally your physician will record your pressure readings over several visits to his or her office, if you have 5 or more readings in a row above 140 Systolic or 90 Diastolic you may be hypertensive.
