What is depression and where it leads to? It is a mental illness that can have lasting emotional and physical effects, such as feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or indecision; difficulty concentrating; change in appetite or sleep habits; loss of energy, interest, or pleasure; loud, violent, troubled, agitated, slowed, or anti-social behaviors; drug or alcohol abuse; and difficulty with interpersonal relation.
Depression is caused by various factors and it is of several types. Endogenous depression is one of the several types. It can be due to some internal biochemical abnormalities. The B-complex vitamins are essential to mental and emotional well-being. Their deficiency may lead us to mood disorder and utter hopelessness. But since they are water soluble and cannot be stored in our body for very long we depend entirely on our daily diet to supply them. Besides, they are easily destroyed by alcohol, refined sugars, nicotine, caffeine, and all the junk food we eat. And so it is common to find people deficient in these.
Scientists have found that vitamins help treat depression and patients respond better to treatment if they have high level of vitamin B12 in their blood. They suggest that taking vitamin B supplements is also a way to boost the effectiveness of anti-depressants. A research was conducted by Kuopio University in Finland on 115 patients who were receiving treatment for depression over a period of six months. It was found that patients with higher concentrations of vitamin B12 responded fully to the treatment whereas the patients with lower concentrations did not have such remarkable effect of the treatment. It was so concluded that deficiency of a substance called monoamines or accumulation of another compound called homocysteine due to the deficiency of vitamin B-complexes lead to depression in human beings.
So go ahead buddies start taking vitamins to overcome vitamin deficiency and fight depression.
