High blood pressure vitamins – do they really exist? Is it actually possible to lower your blood pressure with vitamins? In this article, I take a closer look at vitamins and see if they, or anything else, can help lower your blood pressure.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a well known antioxidant vitamin. Research has shown that antioxidants lead to an increase in the activity of nitric oxide.
This itself leads to widening of the blood vessels which in turn lowers the blood pressure.
Vitamin E
This is also a well known antioxidant vitamin. It is not as potent as vitamin C but it still appears beneficial for anyone with hypertension. It can help to lower bp in as little as 8 weeks.
Vitamin B6
This is one of the most promising vitamins for lowering blood pressure. Studies have been done on rats and this vitamin appears to work in more than one way to lower blood pressure.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is responsible for controlling levels of calcium in the body. It has a role in controlling levels of calcium binding proteins involved in absorption. It also works on a gene that controls levels of renin and hence other chemicals that cause constriction of blood vessels.
Minerals
Minerals can also help or hinder your blood pressure and should not be ignored. Limit the sodium in your diet by eating less salt. Look on food labels for level of sodium. Also increase the amount of potassium that you consume – the best sources of this are fresh fruit and vegetables.
