Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), sometimes called by the older names Benign Intracranial Hypertension (BIH) or Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC), a neurological disorder that is characterized by increased intracranial pressure (pressure around the brain) in the absence of a tumor or other diseases. The main symptoms are painful headaches, nausea and vomiting, as well as pulsatile tinnitus (buzzing in the ears synchronous with the pulse), double vision and other visual symptoms. If untreated, it may lead to swelling of the optic disc in the eye, which can progress to vision loss. A spinal tap (lumbar puncture) and vision tests are used to help diagnose IH. Normal spinal pressure is 5-10. My pressures were 25-50. Way too high! My brain was being squashed, and the pressure on my optic nerves was causing me to lose my vision. I lost all peripheral vision in both eyes and was not allowed to drive. The memory loss was due to the pain, its hard to pay attention when your brain feels like its going to explode out of your eye sockets. Diagnosed in 2002. After 8 months of spinal taps and diamox the headaches went away. In 2009 the headaches returned in full force along with blind-spells and memory loss. My neurologist and neuro-surgeon decided since the meds didn’t work it was time for shunt surgery.
